In parallel with other Italian family history sites, promoted by numerous countries, the Ancestry Site was born to make accessible online the huge documentary heritage of the Civil Registry held by the Italian State Archives, which are essential to carry out genealogical research.
Digitalizing and publishing Civil Registries at the Ancestry Site is made possible by the agreement signed in June 2011 between the Archives General Directions of the Ministry of Heritage, Cultural Activities and Family Search, operative branch of the Genealogical Society of Utah. The Family Search provides, in collaboration with each State Archive, a digital copy of the Civil Registries.
Along the years the Portal has grown, incorporating millions of images and becoming an essential element for those whom want to initiate a genealogical research of their families, but also for historical Demography and social History in a broader sense.
In 2018, a new version of the site has been enriched with new services, search assistance and new multimedia contents.
