Marital status

The Catania State Archives hold the fonds of the Civil Status of Catania and Province (1820-1893). Ferdinand I, King of the Two Sicilies, established the Civil Registry in 1819. Ferdinand I, King of the Two Sicilies, established the Civil Registry in 1819. The fund includes material produced in the Bourbon period and later in the Unification period, the modus operandi of municipalities remained virtually unchanged. Civil registrars compiled the following registers: deeds of legitimate births, deeds of illegitimate births or projets, memoranda, marriage deeds or solemn promises, death certificates and miscellaneous deeds. At the same time, the attachments to birth certificates, marriage certificates, etc. were collected in files. By Royal Decree of 15 November 1865, the new order was introduced, which provided for the compilation of citizenship registers, but did away with registers of miscellaneous deeds.

For the period 1820-1865, documentation is preserved from the civil status of Catania (but only from 1841 to 1865) and the municipalities subject to the Catania Intendency. Also included in this series was material relating to the localities now in the province of Enna (established in 1927): Assoro, Carcaci, Catenanuova, Centuripe, Gagliano, Leonforte, Nicosia, Nissoria, Regalbuto, Sperlinga and Troina. This documentation was transferred to the Enna State Archives in 2013.

Between 1866 and 1893 only the registries from the Catania province are available, except those of Caltagirone, Grammichele, Militello, Mineo, Mirabella, Palagonia, Raddusa, Ramacca, S. Cono, S. M. de Ganzeria, Vizzini.

Matriculation rolls (1871-1889) (includes draft classes 1871, 1877, 1880, 1887, 1889). For searches in the registers we use an alphabetical repertory consisting of a list of names and their matriculation numbers, subdivided by year. The same research tools are available online.

Personal files of military personnel (1862-1900). This substantial core was joined in 2013 and 2016 by a further 360 files with documentation of military personnel from the classes of 1876 to 1898, supplementing the original collection. The files are sorted by class of birth. The search is carried out by means of various consultation tools structured according to the year of extraction and the alphabetical list of names of the military personnel whose file is held. The same lists are available online.
